Chief Executive's Report
Bennetts has remained the region's leading catalogue retailer in the last twelve months. The company distributed around five million catalogues, a figure which is unchanged on the previous year, and we now have 98 stores, an increase of twelve. As was widely reported in the media, merger negotiations with another catalogue retailer ended without agreement.
It is true that this has been a difficult year, with a fall in trading profits, largely resulting from weaker consumer spending, but not helped by disappointing productivity levels in the stores. It is also a cause of worry that production costs are continuing to rise. However, changes in the way we deliver to stores have led to considerable savings.
With the aim of improving customer service and shopping convenience, we have introduced a number of new services in the last twelve months. Shopping by internet was added to the this has been good. A major programme to raise standards will be introduced at once, while the planned improvements to store facilities will be delayed for twelve months. The proposed interactive TV shopping service will not now go ahead, and neither will the planned redevelopment of the corporate headquarters.
Bennetts is changing fast. and we are confident that the newly appointed members of the management team will help us to improve sales within the next twelve months,' even if, as expected, there is no recovery In the economic climate.
